The performance was a huge success! The kids absolutely loved it. It took some time for the students to get involved but the performers did a great job in encouraging them.

The Grange P-12 College, Hoppers Crossing

Hello. I wanted to send this email to let you know how well the performance of African Dance and Drumming went at our campus today, and to say thank you – most sincerely – for your help in setting this up.

The three performers absolutely delighted the staff and the students with their energy, warmth, spirit and their great skills. From my point of view as the Head of Drama, it was wonderful to see their magnetic effect on the crowd and to watch as onlookers overcame their nervousness and shyness to begin dancing around on the grass, clapping their hands and wiggling their hips and having a wonderful time – without any concern for how they might be perceived or who might be watching. For this to happen in a school, where students can sometimes be so self-conscious and vulnerable – especially when encountering something new – is a really great thing; it tells us something about the personality of the three performers who instantly generated their trust.

This kind of performance really demonstrates the power of music and the great power of African music, in particular, to reach out to all kinds of people – from all kinds of backgrounds – and to help them share something that really makes them happy.

Please communicate our thanks and appreciation to the performers who came to us today. Thank you, so much.

Hi Janine,
Thank-you so much for taking time out of your schedule (as I know you are ultra-busy) to travel to Doomadgee and train our group.  We received great information out of the training, and great confidence in facilitating our own drumming sessions.  Everyone enjoyed themselves over the weekend.
The school holidays have since commenced, and we have conducted two sessions on our own.  I noticed that we have made great progress in our skills between the first and second week, and each week we are analysing what we can do to make the following week even better.  By the second week, we were more confident in our facilitation skills, and had good support from the other facilitators.   We noticed that the kids enjoyed playing alongside other adults from the community, and sharing the joy of making music with those that they aspire to.  The program is building momentum with each week, and more community leaders are supporting troubled kids to build the courage to attend and participate.
Janine, as an instructor, you were such an inspiration to us all, in so many different ways. The workshop content and facilitation techniques were well-directed, as you were able to convey the information to us all, who were such a mixed group of people at all different levels of skills and abilities.   It was lovely to meet you, you are truly an amazing and inspirational person.

I would like to thank you very much for a fantastic performance.  Also I got your thank you gift it's gorgeous, thank you very much! This is just some of the feedback we got from the night!!!
Just wanted to thankyou and say that we had a fantastic time on Saturday night at the Masquarade Party.
As per usual Clipsal are very generous to their members.  The African band was great, our table really got in to it and were just like kids banging our sticks together and on the table.

Janine created a wonderful sense of fun, energy, and music dynamics for the consultants who attended. We had great feedback from the client about the program that she took part in and no doubt this was due to Janine’s energy and enthusiasm, which came through her excellent performance and teaching ability’ COMPASS LEARNING PTY LTD

I enjoyed the performance of the Eastern Suburbs Community College AFROBEAT STUDENTS at the official launch of the 2003 Adult Learners Week….The group is certainly very talented, and I was proud to see the level of sophistication they displayed. They are a credit to their tutor (Janine Rew), and a shining example of the wealth of artistic talent in our public education system’

I would like to thank you for your recommendation to have AFROBEAT perform at the Launch and Awards Ceremony of NSW 2003 Adult Learners Week. The Launch and Awards was a great success and the performance of AFROBEAT ensured that the event began on a rousing and vibrant note. Many people commented on how much they enjoyed the group’s performance’

Janine’s work and standard of delivery and presentation is exceptional. Her talent in drumming and dance is clearly professional and her ability to impart her knowledge of African Drumming and Dance is inspirational’
The DRUM CAFÉ

The workshops were very successful with participants learning not only the beautiful rhythms of Africa but also the African culture through the stories Janine would relate to us. Janine explained how different rhythms were specific to different celebrations and customs. It was an enlightening experience for all involved. During these workshops, we were approached by the produces of channel 10 (Sydney) ‘Totally Wild’ Children’s program to film a story on African Drumming. It was an extremely exciting time for us bringing a community of young people, parents and workers together. Janine is a very sincere and genuine person who has the ability to energise a group of people and inspire them to share with her the wonderful rhythms and dances pf Africa . These workshops achieved a high success in bringing together members of our community’

We were introduced to Janine at a Community Forum for Women in St Marys. We were impressed with her performance and standard of professionalism towards her work. We approached Janine to perform and teach our young people skills and techniques of African Drumming at our Youth Camp in January 2002. The idea was to give the young people an insight and experience a different culture through music and dancing. The young people were very enthusiastic toward Janine and the skills she had to offer. Janine possesses excellent communication skills and has no difficulties relating to people at all levels. Her methods of teaching were very simple and easy to understand for the all the young people and group leaders. She is a terrific person with exceptional skills in her profession. We would definitely invite Janine to our Youth Camp again.

Our group, the Penrith Older Women’s Network, had the privilege and pleasure of participating in a workshop lead by Janine Rew. The expertise and clear direction given by Janine enabled our group to be comfortable participating and learning the African Drumming. Janine’s enthusiasm of drumming was evident and she passed this onto the group. … The members who participated in the workshops are eagerly looking forward to further workshops lead by Janine’

Janine has been coming to our School to teach African Dance and Drumming for 2 years now, and I cannot recommend her highly enough. Her classes have been entertaining and kept students interested and enthusiastic for a whole hour-and-a-half period. It is obvious that Janine loves what she does, and this  inspires the same passion in the students. Her classes are fun and allow all abilities to experience success. They are also a fun way to inspire cultural awareness in the Students’

Janine is greatly admired by all who know her, including myself for her strength of character and outstanding achievements on many levels, as well as her profound talents in dance and African music. I have seen her project ‘AFROBEAT’ grow from a concept into a small but powerful and respected organisation and collective that reflects her hard work, dedication and spirit for the arts. Over the years, I have realised what an inspiration she is to many people through her commitment and unwavering dedication to her passion. Janine is also a person who brings others together through her activities and is a key figure in the community – one of the pillars who maintains a channel of communication between many people’

Thanks for your expertise and passion for teaching in the arts. We loved having you and your drummers involved in our 1st Dance Workshop at Marion College . We hope to continue our workshops and develop camps; your involvement will be valued’

Peta. Dance Coordinator, Marion College NSW Later, we were involved in a successful Marion College ’ 1st annual Dance Camp.

What I thought was really exciting about Afrobeat was their ability to get ALL of our team members involved in the activities.  We were thrilled to see new skills emerge within individuals in our group.  It was a wonderful experience to see the progress from a cacophony of sounds at the beginning of the session into a sleek and streamlined performance at the end.   It was more powerful than a discussion around teamwork as we had created this for ourselves.  It was the perfect activity after lunch as it lifted our energy levels so we could move into our planning session.   It was a great corporate training session with a refreshing and invigorating twist’

Thanks Janine and Jonathan for coming to our session. Everyone agreed it was the highlight of their day! I’ll certainly pass on the photos to the team!’
Sarah Forbes, Yarra Ranges Shire Council VIC

The drummers for the launch of ‘Mother’ had an energy that lit up the room. Their enthusiasm was infectious and as for their actual drumming skills – everyone was blown away!’
Chad Davis, DJ/Musical Director for the Coca-Cola Mother Launch Tour VIC

The parade went really well – Janine and Jonathan were excellent! Not to mention lovely people. They kept the kids (and me!) drumming the right beat for the whole parade, which was no mean feat. It was a resounding success, and to top things off, we won one of the 3 awards they give out – the ‘most innovative entry’ – so we even have a trophy! I’m sure we couldn’t have done it without you. So my sincere thanks! The kids really did have a great time’
Tegan Rose, Teacher, Altona Secondary College/Primary School VIC

Thank-you so much for making yesterday so much fun – this morning everyone is still talking about it!’
Corporate Team Building Event. Nicola Scott, Bristol-Myers Squibb @ the Marriott Hotel Melbourne
I really enjoyed it. It was great to be challenged by a different teaching style. It was also fun to have yourself, Damion, Aliou (Sylla) and Irene playing drums with us because it provided more atmosphere and it was fun to see how the rhythms can be developed in a larger and more experience group of players. I loved the evening performance, it was nice to have a goal to work towards and show off to your family a little bit. It was also great to see the skills that you, Damion, and Aliou have – very inspiring!’
